feeding the ear

I am not really a musical type of person. I know nothing about notes, or rhythm, or melody although I have heard of them from school, of course. In which case, they didn’t get enough interest from me to actually go the extra mile and learn Music.

 Neither do I sing.

But one thing that I am good at is to listen.

In fact, I have a couple of favorite songs. Some of those are the ones I have heard repeatedly over music stations which eventually became earworm for me. Others are basically random songs that do not belong to any particular qualification.

My musical preference is actually very shallow. As long as the song is something I could actually UNDERSTAND, then it’s something I would learn to like.

To understand a song, of course, means to pay attention to what it says. The LYRICS to me are most important. Maybe because I have had numerous Literature courses in college where all we ever did was to analyze what a particular work of literature could possibly mean.

Novels, essays, short stories, epics, drama, all the sorts. Songs were, of course, poetry in the very basic sense. All were classics though.

Eventually, I have had enough of the classics and turned on to what I can actually hear now. I started to pay attention and interpret the lyrics of the popular songs over the radio and on TV.

Every once in a while I find songs that have mysticism in the words. I particularly like the ones which express sentiments way beyond the simple meaning of the lyrics and those that have can vividly story-tell.

Here’s one from Peter Gene Hernandez, aka Bruno Mars:

Today my life begins

I’ve been working hard so long
seems like pain has been my only friend
my fragile heart’s been done so wrong
I wondered if I’d ever heal again

Ohh just like all the seasons never stay the same
All around me I can feel a change (Ohh)

I will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me
leave the past behind me, today my life begins,
a whole new world is waiting It’s mine for the taking,
I know I can make it, today my life begins

Yesterday has come and gone
and I’ve learned how to leave it where it is
and I see that I was wrong
for ever doubting I could win

Ohh just like all the seasons never stay the same
All around me I can feel a change (ohh)

I will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me,
leave the past behind me, today my life begins
a whole new world is waiting it’s mine for the taking
I know I can make it, today my life begins

life’s too short to have regrets
so iIm learning now to leave it in the past and try to forget
only have one life to live
so you better make the best of it

I will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me
leave the past behind me, today my life begins,
a whole new world is waiting it’s mine for the taking
I know I can make it, today my life begins

I will break these chains that bind me, happiness will find me,
leave the past behind me, today my life begins,
a whole new world is waiting it’s mine for the taking
I know I can make it, today my life begins,
today my life begins…
